Find a job or carry on studying? This is a question facing a lot of students at the start of their final year. I too faced that dilemma when I started my year-long Master’s in Applied Economics. I had just spent eight months studying in Montpellier and had completed a three-month work placement in the financial division of a multinational. After a relaxing holiday, I went back to UGent, where I immediately came into contact with large companies and their impressive recruitment campaigns. I was invited to various meet & greets, where companies spared no expense or effort to promote their job offers. After I had attended a number of company events, I decided to take part in a selection day at the start of December for a job as a junior auditor with one of the “big 4”. Not quite my dream job, but a good opportunity to spend a day gaining some job application experience. Along with 20 other students, I went through the selection process: knowledge tests, language tests and interviews with HR managers. A tiring day that ended with me being offered a contract. “What now?” was the question running through my head as I returned home.
