Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Early Childhood Music Education

The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers four Bachelor and 15 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

Your Role...

The Associate/Assistant Professor will be a member of the Department of Education and Social Work within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

Children use music and music ideas in both observable and unobservable ways: in their routines, play, and relationships. All these ways contribute positively to their aesthetic, expressive, emotional, intellectual, social, physical, and creative development. Since the field of early childhood music is characterised by varying theoretical frameworks and underpinned by different and often competing epistemological perspectives, the successful candidate will demonstrate good insight in the ongoing research discussions in Early Childhood Music Education.

At the same time, music is also considered an important medium of personal expression and development for people of all ages, right up to old age. Goals, contents, and methods for music education work with groups of people of all ages are developed in Elemental Music Education. The successful candidate will have relevant expertise and professional experience in this field. Finally, closely related to this subject is instrumental pedagogy. Ideally, the successful candidate will also be qualified as a competent specialist in this subject.

With regard to the new Bachelor programme in Music Education at the University of Luxembourg, all kinds of Music Education will be seen primarily as a pedagogical domain. Therefore, the successful candidate will be able to consider pedagogical principles which are discussed in educational science and in pedagogical professional discourse.

Furthermore, she/he will demonstrate a strong interest in the specific needs and challenges especially of the Luxembourgish educational system of music education.

She/he will develop research activities in elemental and/or instrumental music education at the University of Luxembourg.

The Associate/Assistant Professor will teach in the new Bachelor programme for Music Education. She/he will also be in charge to lead the programme as Study Programme Director and to develop the programme further in close cooperation with the Luxembourgish Conservatoires.

She/he will also establish close cooperation with the Bachelor en Sciences de l’Éducation (BScE) and will share courses of the Bachelor for Music Education with the BScE.

Candidates shall have a research profile in at least one out of the following fields:

• General didactics of early musical education;
• Psychological and cognitive dimensions of musical talent and development;
• History of musical education;
• Music education and intercultural competence;
• Aesthetic education and instrumental pedagogy;
• Musical education and live-span development.

Qualifications, experience, aptitude

• PhD in music education or in a related discipline;
• A minimum of three years of post-doctoral experience acquired in a university or comparable research centre;
• University-level teaching experience at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level;
• Publication records corresponding to the academic experience;
• Ability to work autonomously;
• Ability to work in a multilingual environment.

Languages

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English and either French or German. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
