The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on socialeconomicpolitical and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers four Bachelor and 15 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high- qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

Your Role...

The holder of the position will be a member of the Department of Education and Social Work and will address the development of social policy and social interventions on multiple levels - from life courses and communities to the nation-state, region, and the world. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in the institutional, technological, political, and economic conditions that shape social policies as well as different forms and fields of intervention. Research activities should include at least two of the following areas of interest: Social security & care in multicultural, interdependent societies; diversity & inclusion in the governance and design of social services & interventions; vulnerability, marginalization & multi-stakeholder communication in welfare state & civil society; contemporary issues in social policy debates (e.g. social & racial justice, datafication of social services etc.).

The holder will contribute to conceptual frameworks and theoretical perspectives offered by the Institute for Social Research and Interventions (ISI) within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative empirical research methods is expected, as well as a willingness to contribute to the development of innovative research methodologies in the context of collaborations between life-world/subject-oriented research and research on institutional/organizational structures.

Additional expertise in methodologies for the evaluation of policies and programmes and for guiding advocacy and organizing in collaboration with diverse communities, and projects in cooperation with community leaders and practitioners is advantageous. The holder is expected to contribute to teaching in the Bachelor en sciences sociales et éducatives and related Master and PhD programmes.

Teaching areas

Social policy; transformation of social services; civil society and welfare state; welfare reforms and multi- stakeholder communication; theories & methodologies of social and/or educational sciences

The position holder will provide essential teaching for the Bachelor en Sciences Sociales et Éducatives (BSSE), which has recently been reformed with this position in view. Additional teaching shall be offered in the Master in Social Sciences and Education (MASSES), and the next intake (2022) for the Master programme Management and Coaching im Bildungs- und Sozialwesen (MAMACO).

These programmes – all involved in the on-going transformation of Luxembourg’s educational and social services – need comparative social policy expertise integrating national, regional, and global perspectives to retain and further develop their excellence.

What we expect from you…

  • PhD in sociology, social work, education or in a related discipline;
  • A minimum of three years of post-doctoral experience acquired in a university, comparable research centre, or policy organization;
  • Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative empirical research methods;
  • Willingness to contribute to the development of innovative research methodologies in the context of collaborations between life-world/subject-oriented research and research on institutional/ organizational structures;
  • Additional expertise in methodologies for the evaluation of policies and programmes and for guiding advocacy and organizing in collaboration with diverse communities, and projects in cooperation with community leaders and practitioners is advantageous;
  • An appropriate international research profile as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, conference participation, and collaboration in national and/or international research and/or policy initiatives;
  • University-level teaching experience at the undergraduate and the postgraduate

Language requirements 

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English and either French or German. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
